View Full Version : 3ed rule questions
We started our NAB3 campaign and have a few questions.
1) If the CoO is forced to flee off the map. It reappears during the next friendly movement phase.
Can it also move in that movement phase (no)
Is it flipped to its active side during the consolidation segment of the movement phase if it does not move (yes)
if it just placed back on the map and does not move the army is only out of supply for one turn and the player looses only one roll on the AP table. (yes, yes).
2) In the errata it states that repulse is now also allowed in the forced march phase.
Does that mean the force marching unit must start its forced march adjacent to to unit it will repulse. (yes)
ie a forced marching unit may not enter a ZOC of an enemy unit that is not already in a friendly ZOC. (yes)
eg The allied player has two Silesian forces (S1,S2) on the map ,4 MPs apart along a primary road. (There is no primary river in sight)
The French player moves Napoleon next to S1, He runs a a couple of vedettes in between S1 and S2, cutting the road. The vedettes are not adjacent to either S1 or S2 and remain hidden. They would therefore extend a ZOC around them and Silesian force S2 could not reinforce S1 during FM as it could not enter the ZOCs of the hidden vedettes and repulse them.
3) A player moves a vedette adjacent to an enemy force, repluse is not declared. The vedette and the force are revealed. (yes)
A player moves his force next to a vedette, a repulse is not declared. The vedette and the force are revealed. (yes)
4) A vedette retreats before combat. The other force may not pursue. Not even into the vacant hex. correct?
5) Napoleon should have two stars?
6) If the Army commander is stacked with the CoO can you add/subtract one from the AP role, or just subtract. (subtract only)
The decision to modify is made after the die roll? (yes)
7) If a commander has several subordinates in a hex. Do these HAVE to be placed on the track if the force remains together in that movement phase. Or can you you keep a stack on the map provided one leader has enough command span.
8) If a force does not move does it still have to roll for attrition? (yes)
Some general comments:
We really like the hidden movement, it makes the game much more exciting but does slow thing down a bit as we flip counters and try to remember where they were.
The new attrition table also takes a bit of getting used to but I guess it is more continuous than the previous version. I like the force march modifiers. It seems more realistic though it also makes the Guard more powerful.
cheers

I just found the answers to 7 & 8.
Following on from 7. I guess that means that during forced march you can't send off a subordinate leader. ( no you can't)
9) During force march a force moves but drops off a subordinate leader in the hex it started. ie the main leader moves but leaves behind part of its force. Do both forces suffer the full attrition. (yes)
eg a force of 20SP starts the combat phase. During FM the main leader moves 10SP 5MPs. During attrition you roll once for 20SP, 5MPs.

9) A force that doesn't move isn't dropped-off, so I'd say that part that doesn't move doesn't suffer attrition.
Thanks Kevin.
I have been working my way through NAB, BII and SOA rules to learn the rules.
I still have a couple of questions.
10) Can you place subordinate leaders on the map as new forces at the start of the Force March phase?
11) When an attack is 'ruined' by displacement. Do the attackers have to attack the force(s) in their ZOC after the displacement?
Finally a general question. I don't want to be a pain by asking all these questions (and I really appreciate the answers) but I come from an Advanced Squad Leader background. In ASL the letter of the law is everything and reality arguments and interpretations are strictly not allowed. What is the position of CNS? Can we use common sense or do we have to go to the letter of the law?
Specifically in Q9 the answer makes perfect common sense. Though a strict reading of the rule would suggest it contributes to attrition.
I attached a capability chart with reference to the SOA rules. Comments welcome.

10) Can you place subordinate leaders on the map as new forces at the start of the Force March phase? A) No
11) When an attack is 'ruined' by displacement. Do the attackers have to attack the force(s) in their ZOC after the displacement? A) Yes.
In squad leader a man is allowed to run 60 yards in five seconds, which is 20% quicker than the world record, and probably two or three times as speedy as regular troops loaded down with equipment. So that would put an end to reality arguments.
A couple more:
1) Can a vedette cause the center of operations to flee?
2) A force of 1i,1cav is adjacent to a force of 1i,3c. Both have an initiative of 4.
If the first force wants to move away during force march is his initiative modifier +2 + +3 = +5? ie it can't move.

A1) No.
A2) Yes, both the cavalry and initiative comparison modifiers apply.
A couple more questions from sundays NAB session:
Q1) Can a vedette act as a spoiler in combat?
eg force R and S move adjacent to force X. R and S could combine as a multihex force in combat.
Can a vedette move adjacent to force R only and thus force R to attack the vedette and S to attack X by itself?
Q2) A Vedette end its movement phase adjacent to an enemy vedette. Both are revealed. May the enemy vedette just move away in the force march phase? Could it move through the hex of the other vedette?
Q3) When you have repulsed a unit do you have to enter its hex? Or can you move off into another direction?
Q4) Can an unrevealed vedette block a pursuit?
eg Force X is attacked. behind force X is a screen of unrevelead vedettes. Force X retreats through the screen. Pursuing force P has stop pursuit as soon as it enters the zoc of the unrevealed vedettes?
Q5) A retreat has to get the force closer to its supply source. Is this measured in hexes or MPs?
Q6) Can a guard unit in a mixed force use its movement bonus to repair/damage a bridge?

Q6) Can a guard unit in a mixed force use its movement bonus to repair/damage a bridge?
A) No.
Thanks Kevin.
I wish I new Q4 last week, I would have got a morale gain as the allies, but no doubt would have had a pounding from Napoleon the following turn!

Hi Kevin
A few more questions about bridges:
1) Is a pontoon bridge deployed at the end of the movement phase, in the bridge segment?
eg
turn one; move up to the river and if you have enough movement points then deploy the bridge.
turn two; move across the bridge.
This gives the enemy a force march to get close to the bridge and a movement phase to attack across it.
ie if you start next to the river you can't deploy the pontoon and move across it in the same phase?
Does that mean that it took 2 days historically to deploy the bridge?
2) Can you disassemble a pontoon when an enemy is on the other side?
3) Can an enemy vedette on the other side of the bridge prevent the repair of a bridge?

1) if you start next to the river you can't deploy the pontoon and move across it in the same phase? Does that mean that it took 2 days historically to deploy the bridge?
No. You can deploy and move across, but it takes Movement Points away from the unit crossing.
2) Can you disassemble a pontoon when an enemy is on the other side?
No.
3) Can an enemy vedette on the other side of the bridge prevent the repair of a bridge?
No.
1) Can any non cavalry leader undeploy a bridge?
eg leader A places a pontoon and sets off for Paris. A few days later neighbouring bridges are captured an repaired and leader B packs up leader A's pontoon.
2) Do ZOCs extend across a damaged bridge? eg French unit F and Silesian unit S are guarding a broken bridge. Do they reveal each other every turn?
3) The Silesian player calls the French players bluff and tries to repair the bridge. At which point does the French player need to declare whether F is a vedette or not? Before the Silesians spend an AP?, before it spends the MPs or in the bridge step of the movement phase?

1) Can any non cavalry leader undeploy a bridge?
Yes
2) Do ZOCs extend across a damaged bridge?
Over a Primary river, no.
3) The Silesian player calls the French players bluff and tries to repair the bridge. At which point does the French player need to declare whether F is a vedette or not?
In the bridge step of the movement phase.
A few more:
1) Does the french bridge train arrive as a replacement or as a reinforcement that has to march out from Paris?
2) Are Pahlen, Ataman et al considered to be Cavalry Major Generals? ie does their initiative drop to 1 when commanding infantry?
If Olsufief and Scherbatow are subordinated to Pahlen (who moves his cavalry to a maj gen) they suddenly becomes very mobile. Specially if Sacken becomes unemployed the Silesians starts to rival the French for mobility. (exc attrition of course)

1) It has to march out from Paris.
2) Ataman yes, but the others are not.
A few more questions:
1) If a units C.Ops is inactive (eg it has moved) but the unit is in despatch distance of in active supply source does it roll on the No LOC column for attrition?
2) We are a bit confused about the sequence of play regarding bridges.
2a) Damaging. Does a unit spend the MP to damage a bridge in the movement segment but the bridge is damaged in the bridge segment? ie other units can cross between the unit spending the MPs and the bridge blowing?
2b) Repairing: If unit repairs a bridge are those MPs spend in the movement segment or the bridge segment? ie can one unit spend 5MPs to fix a bridge and other nearby unit cross that same bridge during the same movement phase?
Only 6 turns to go till the end of the campaign.
cheers

"1) Can any non cavalry leader undeploy a bridge?"
"Yes"
Shouldn't that be: "A bridge train can be attached to any leader except a Major General"?
A few more questions about garrisons:
1) Does a ZOC extend into a garrison town? ieif a vedette moves adjacent does it get to see who is in the garrison town?
2) A force ends its pursuit next to a garrison town. The force in the town moves out in the movement phase. Leaving the the garrison to fight it out.
Does combat occur in the combat phase when a phasing garrison is adjacent to a non phasing force?
3) When does the garrison reappear in the town?
eg a silesian force retreats through an occupied garrison town displacing its occupiers. When does
the garrison return?
4) A force has to retreat 7 hexes. On its 5th hex it crosses a bridge. The pursuer only pursues 1 hex. Are losses still doubled?
Only 4 turns to go and Napoleon is proving a very slippery fellow rolling three 1's on initiative to save his skin.
5) Can you move straight from one zoc to another? ie shuffle sideways in adjacent combat hexes

These questions are answered in the rules. I respect the fact that you are reading in a foreign language.
1) Does a ZOC extend into a garrison town? ie if a vedette moves adjacent does it get to see who is in the garrison town?
A) No and no.
2) A force ends its pursuit next to a garrison town. The force in the town moves out in the movement phase. Leaving the the garrison to fight it out.
Does combat occur in the combat phase when a phasing garrison is adjacent to a non phasing force?
A) Garrison is not required to attack.
3) When does the garrison reappear in the town?
eg a silesian force retreats through an occupied garrison town displacing its occupiers. When does the garrison return?
A) Not automatically, you have to provide the SPs for it.
4) A force has to retreat 7 hexes. On its 5th hex it crosses a bridge. The pursuer only pursues 1 hex. Are losses still doubled?
A) Yes.
Only 4 turns to go and Napoleon is proving a very slippery fellow rolling three 1's on initiative to save his skin.
5) Can you move straight from one zoc to another? ie shuffle sideways in adjacent combat hexes
A) No.
