The Coming Storm
PROGRESS REPORT
The color components (box, map, counters) have the longest lead-time and so are the first items to be printed. The Box is on schedule, the counter mix is taking longer than we thought, but we don't mind taking the extra time to be able to provide the definitive OB for these important battles.

The counter mix is a bit tricky since we are using the same French forces for three different battles; there are times when a unit sets-up at reduced strength. The same is true for the Russians. The countermix has already been submitted to Mark Simonitch- and his shop has produced a first draft- but we decided to go over the Prussians one last time when we got more information from John Wladis. David Jones has just finished that review and I will have the revised Prussian mix on its way to the artists this week... The game map for Eylau is at the second draft stage. I have just sent a hand-marked proof back to Joe this morning... Jason is running playtests of the revised Four Lost Battles rules (including new cards), on 1813 battles, until we get a set of maps and counters for Eylau.

KEVIN ZUCKER'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE
It was ten days in northern California at the end of April to see my mom (she's doing fine), spend six days relaxing in Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz Hostel, 3 blocks to the beach), attend GMT West in Hanford, and meet with graphic designer Mark Simonitch (see above). Also talked with Mark Kaczmarek, Steve Carey (who praised the book "Inner Truth") and chatted with Gene Billingsley, who showed me some of his latest projects.

We are getting ready for the NAPOLEONIC TOUR. We have seven people signed-up for the whole tour, and many more grognards will be meeting with us for the welcome dinner on May 27th in Mantova. Figuring out the meeting schedule (time & place) for each participant was a chore - completed in fine! I am preparing my talk for the Italian Army Officers Club (with maps & photos) that will take place at the very start of the tour and will provide context for all the battlefield visits.

Special Study Nr. 5 Feedback

My deepest thanks to you concerning the issue No. 5 of the Special Studies series which I received this weekend! I must admit that I unwrapped the whole thing furiously and sat down the whole afternoon to read the article, study the historical connections or just scan the huge data base thrown on me!

I am absolutely stunned by this amount of work you laid down and mastered for an outstanding book that perhaps will once be called a "standard" about the 1806-campaign! And, please let me add that I was thrilled by the fact that you are "back in"!!

By all my overwhelming joy, I would like to throw in one thought that struck me while I read through the pages: Did you had a German lecturer for having a very last look upon all the German words, spellings or just even the "continuity" of used German spellings?

Just a kind of offering a more wide approach towards an outstanding lecturing book which is in my opinion already superb!

With deepest respect,
Andy (521tiger)

I just received my copy of 1806: The Coming Storm and I am looking forward immensely to reading it - it looks to be easily up to the standard set by the previous volumes and I am sure it will be just as informative and as entertaining as they are.

However, It does seem to be marred by one error (unfortunately prominently-placed): the nice picture on the back cover is not a picture of "Goethes Wohnhaus" at 1 Frauenplan, but a picture of his garden house in the Park an der Ilm. The two buildings are about a kilometer apart; I visited both in 2007.

Links to the German Wikipedia article on the house in the Frauenplan:

and the Gartenhaus in the Park an der Ilm:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goethes_Gartenhaus (including the same image reproduced on the back cover of the book).

All this is of course quite collateral to the purpose of the book, but you may decide that an erratum is called for.

LIBRARY OF NAPOLEONIC BATTLES
These battles are in the same 480-meter, 1-hour scale as The Coming Storm. Each volume includes two to four games in the Last Battles system with two to four game maps, 280 or 560 counters, 2 separate rules folders, and cards. We are deciding on the next title in this series and we'd like to have your feedback on these proposals. The titles are listed in the survey which you can complete by clicking on the link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FNK9HK2

UNSUNG HEROES
So many people give of their time and resources to OSG, from our artists and playtesters to our hard-working editors, developers, and many others. Here are several grognards who have been very heavily involved of late.
-Jay Olsen, our volunteer Mac specialist, has kept our computers running and updated for over five years, contributing equipment, making back-ups, and production pdfs, just to mention a few things...
-Mark James, our hard-working Web Admin, has been running Napoleongames.com since January of 2004. He is currently working on a new shopping cart that will calculate real postage!
-Jason Roach is developing the updated Four Lost Battles rules that we will use for The Coming Storm.
-Robert Tunstall has been busy with the maps for SS Nr. 5, the box cover for The Coming Storm (check out that map on the box back), and now he is starting the maps for SS Nr. 6.
-John Wladis has been OSG's consultant for Orders of Battle since 1979. He outdid himself this year, providing layers of detail on the Prussians for our recently-published Study on the Jena-Auerstadt campaign (this info arrived just in time to benefit The Coming Storm).
-David Jones has taken the lead in converting the wealth of information provided by Wladis into a succinct spreadsheet for use in creating the counter artwork.
-Riccardo Rinaldi has been organizing the Napoleonic Tour from his home in Mantova, Italy, which- as the focus of the 1796 campaign- will also be our headquarters for the tour later this month. Kudos to all!!

NEW VOLUME ON THE 1814 CAMPAIGN
Special Study Nr. 6: The Campaign in France

Now that Special Study Nr. 5 is published, we wanted to return to the campaign that launched OSG back in 1978. This study will recap what we have learned about this campaign since the publication of Napoleon at Bay. When we set out to design that game, everyday facets of Napoleonic warfare were hidden; facts about march rates, attrition and supply never were cared about by historians. The volume is 128 pages and is physically similar to the other Studies published by OSG (8.5" x 11" full-color cover, perfect bound). It will contain a day-by-day record of the campaign, supplemented with 40 maps and 30 pages of appendices (mostly OB). Robert Tunstall has started on the maps already. Napoleon departed from Paris at the start of the campaign on January 24th, 1814. Seventy-two days later he bid Adieu to his guard and headed to the isle of Elba. SS Nr. 6 is a $40 retail value; you can pre-order now for $28 plus shipping. Look for the new book in October.
