From: Matthieu Karrer

Dear friends,

With late. I had a lot of pleasure to meet you.
This week was excellent. True grognards, good
food, moved battlefields, good relation. It is
difficult to do more. I will remember for a long
time.

See you

Matthieu

From: Nicola Contardi

Dear friends,

We have finally seen our own faces and not only our emails!

See you another time, in another place.

Your friend,
Nicola Contardi

PS Pictures of the Tour to be posted soon on Consim (as soon as my home connection re-starts)

Hi Everyone,

Looks like I'm the straggler in sending an email
saying how good it was to meet all of you and
what a great time it was exploring the
battlefields and menus of northern Italy together.
You've re-awoken my motivation to start playing
wargames again -- but maybe not Condottieri ;-)

Thanks to Michel for sharing his maps. They are really excellent.

Thanks to Riccardo for his over-the-top efforts and good humor.

Hoping to run into some or all you again sometime sooner or later,

Cheers,
Patrick

Hi all from Ravenna to which i decamped after the tour.

i found it all very stimulating, particularly
Jean-Marc's very fascinating concepts of game
design and game play ;)

i also received some great ideas for a game on
the era of 1870-1914 that I have been thinking
about for a while. When I get back to kangaroo
land i will forward a synopsis to you all. ideas
most welcome.

Condottiere in the Piazza of Mantova is a memory
that will stay with me for a long time.

Regards

Steve

PS, I am more likely to be on Boardgamegeek than
Consimworld...my user name is Aussie550

THE HABIT OF VICTORY QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

If you don't own a copy of this game you can order it now fore $61 with your pre-order for "The Coming Storm." And don't be afraid of those small individual Movement Commands...

From: Mikolaj Lenczewski

1) Can "Walewska" card be played when Napoleon is not on the map? Card does not say so - so you can - but logic tells me it should not be allowed because of penalties for French player which he 'avoids' by playing this card when Napoleon is not on the map.

Waleska can take a carriage to Posen, so you can.

2) The first sentence of Pursuit Event Table for 31-32 Rerguard is wrong: "Your troops may retreat through a friendly force without displacing it (see Standard 174/3). In standard rules we find information that there is no displacement in 2X for pursuits.

Good. Delete that sentence.

3) In 2X-HoV standard rules*there are no losses (at least as many as the winning side suffered)*for loser in the pursuit battle if there is no pursuit at least of one hex. I have run on few situations when winner suffered losses, but could not pursuit and so the loser had no losses. In 2X-NatC standard rules this rule (205) was liked in 1X - the loser always suffers as many ....) Should NatC be played now with HoV standard rules for 2X ?

Yes.

4) Can artillery be first to suffer losses in pursuit battle for the winner? Rules prohibit this only for pitched battle. Again I had situations where there was a battle, loser retreated, there was no pursuit, only the winner suffered casaulties and I was taking them from artillery. A bit strange, or not?

Artillery can be the first to take losses - especially during mud it makes sense.

5) Card #30 "Chief of Staff" says that Major General's initiative is raised by 2, however notes for cards says that it*is the command*span. Which is true? Since this is an event for Movement Command increasing iniatitive is a bit useless...

As noted, it must mean Command Span.

QUIZ: WIN A FREE COPY OF "THE COMING STORM"

One winner will receive a free copy of The Coming Storm (and if already pre-ordered, will receive a full refund). Three runners-up will receive a $40 credit good toward any OSG product in print or in pre-order. Winners are selected at the sole discretion of OSG's panel of experts. DISCLAIMER: Our experts are not necessarily smarter than you, so remain calm if we don't choose your answer. There is always next time!

The Italian Quadrilateral is a combination of four mutually supporting fortified towns - Mantua, Peschiera, Verona, and Legnago; the former two on the Mincio and the latter two on the Adige. The real value of the Quadrilateral, which gave Austria such a firm hold on Lombardy, lay in the great natural strength of Mantua.
Question: How did this configuration of fortresses shape the campaign of 1796?

You may select MORE than one correct answer:
a) They guarded the main routes from Trento and Vicenza.
b) Lines of communications could not pass by an enemy-occupied fort.
c) The forts in French hands could obstruct an Austrian relief attempt toward Mantova.
d) The three other forts were needed before besieging Mantova.
e) All four forts were necessary for the control of Lombardy.
f) The rivers could not be crossed except at the four forts.
g) All of the above.
h) None of the above.

Please do NOT send entries at this time. The Quiz response period is over. Responses are being evaluated by our "team of experts." The first winning entry will receive a free copy of "The Coming Storm." The three runner-up entries will be awarded each one $40 credit good for purchases direct from OSG.

Winners, at the sole discretion of the editors, will be announced in the next OSG Report. Enjoy!

PROGRESS REPORT, SPECIAL STUDY NR. 6

Much new research has come to light in the last 30 years, so it is time to revisit this campaign. This study will contain a day-by-day record of the campaign, supplemented with 40 maps and 30 pages of appendices (mostly OB). Robert Tunstall has completed the base map (see attachment). Napoleon departed from Paris at the start of the campaign on January 24th, 1814. Seventy-two days later he bid adieu to his guard and headed to the isle of Elba. SS Nr. 6 is a $40 retail value; you can pre-order now for $28 plus shipping. Look for the new book in October.
